A Brief History of our City
Coker/Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA) is one of the 37 LCDAs established in Lagos State in 2003 during the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The creation of these LCDAs was a strategic response to the rapid population growth and increasing urban complexity of Lagos State, aimed at bringing governance closer to the grassroots and accelerating socio-economic development.
Coker/Aguda LCDA was carved out of Surulere Local Government Area, alongside other administrative units, to enhance service delivery and administrative efficiency.
Geographically, the LCDA occupies a central position within Surulere, covering key communities from Aguda to Orile-Iganmu. Its strategic location, bordered by districts such as Itire-Ikate, positions it as a vital hub for residential, commercial, and cultural activities within the Lagos mainland.
Since its establishment, Coker/Aguda LCDA has evolved into a vibrant and diverse urban community, characterized by a blend of traditional heritage and modern development. The area is home to a dynamic population engaged in commerce, craftsmanship, and small-scale industries, contributing significantly to the local economy.
The creation of Coker/Aguda LCDA was driven by the Lagos State Government’s commitment to decentralizing governance and promoting inclusive development such as:
– Enhancing governance through smaller, more manageable administrative units.
– Bringing government closer to the people for improved responsiveness to local needs.
– Accelerating the provision of roads, healthcare, education, and other public services.

Following its creation in October 2003, Coker/Aguda LCDA quickly developed governance structures, including Community Development Associations (CDAs) and a Community Development Committee (CDC), which serve as vital links between the government and residents.
These grassroots institutions have played a critical role in mobilizing community participation, fostering unity, and facilitating the implementation of development projects. Over time, the LCDA has expanded its administrative capacity, strengthening departments responsible for health, education, infrastructure, environmental services, and social welfare.
